You may be present in the Schengen area for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. The window is not a calendar reset; it slides. On any given day, count backwards 180 days (including that day); if your days of presence in that span exceed 90, you're over.
Both your arrival and departure days count. A trip from the 1st to the 5th counts as five days. Counting it as four is the most common mistake. Because the window rolls, days fall out of the back one at a time, so your allowance recovers gradually.
Not legal advice. Border officers compute the same figures from your entry and exit stamps, which are sometimes missing or illegible. Keep boarding passes and accommodation records for any trip near the limit, and confirm your status before you travel.
